Campaign Story

Adoloscent Collective Meeting

About the project

CRY America Project Gram Swaraj Sangh works to strengthen the health of women and children living in the Rapar block of Kutch district. Factors such as low immunization rates, limited access to healthcare, inadequate staffing and infrastructure, and prevalent superstitions around pregnancy and childbirth lead to low birth weight and high infant mortality. A lack of awareness and persistent gender inequality drive girls into early marriage, further undermining their health and well-being.

Making a difference

The project works to provide health and nutritional support to children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers across 23 hamlets in the Rapar block. Key activities include counselling pregnant women on institutional deliveries, promoting postnatal nutritional awareness, and linking families to government programs. The project also focuses on forming Women’s Collectives, Adolescent Collectives, and Girl Child Collectives to address issues such as infant mortality, low birth weight, child marriage, and girls’ education.

Nourishing change in Pujaben’s life

Pujaben is 16, an active member of CRY’s Adolescent Collective. But for a while, something wasn’t right. During meetings, where her voice once rang clear, she often sat quietly, battling fatigue and low energy. A routine health check-up revealed the reason as her haemoglobin level was just 9.5 Hb, indicating anaemia.

When the CRY project team noticed her condition, they stepped in with care and urgency. In gentle conversations, they tried to understand her daily habits. Pujaben shyly admitted her love for street food and processed snacks, a familiar comfort for many teenagers her age.

The team didn’t lecture, they explained. They helped her understand what low haemoglobin does to the body, especially for adolescents, and why nourishing food matters. Together, they explored simple, locally available iron-rich options like pulses, millets, groundnuts, jaggery, and seasonal vegetables while gradually reducing processed foods.

Support extended beyond Pujaben. The team visited her home, patiently counselling her parents and inviting them to become partners in her journey toward better health.

Of course, like any teenager who enjoys snacking with friends, giving up junk food wasn’t easy. There were days of temptation and slow progress. But the team stayed consistent, encouraging her, checking in on her meals, and regularly monitoring her haemoglobin levels.

Their persistence, and Pujaben’s own determination, began to show results. Within a year, her haemoglobin rose to 10.5 Hb. But she didn’t stop there. Motivated to stay strong and fully participate in the Adolescent Collective, because she knows there is still a long road ahead for her and her community, Pujaben continued caring for her health.

Today, her haemoglobin stands at a healthy 13 Hb.

Most importantly, her energy, confidence, and voice are back where they belong, helping her move forward for herself and her community.
